18th Annual Space Coast Birding & Wildlife Festival 2015

We are honored to be a part of the festival this year and have special “Water Adventures” posted for every day in the magazine and listed below. The festival runs from January 21st through January 26th, 2015 and is put on by The Brevard Nature Alliance. The Festival focuses on the abundance and diversity of the world around us with emphasis placed on preservation and management of animals and their habitats, cultural heritage, and historical venues found in our part of East Central Florida. The area that Palm Bay Kayaks will be paddling is rich in flora, fauna, cultural heritage and history! Come join us and enjoy the beauty that surrounds us. Wednesday January 21st and Sunday January 25, 2015: Turkey Creek Sanctuary Paddle and Hike; 8:00am-12:00pm             Limited to 10 participants; Cost $49 per person; Meet at Pollak Park Boat Ramp on Main St. just West of RR tracks and Route 1 off Palm Bay Road. Join Florida Master Naturalists and expert tour guides of Palm Bay Kayaks for an exciting kayaking/hiking tour of the Turkey Creek Sanctuary featuring top of the line Ascend kayaks. The Sanctuary is managed by the Florida Audubon Society, the EEL program, and the City of Palm Bay. It is listed on the State of Florida Great Florida Birding Trail for Osprey, Wading birds, Ducks, and Woodpeckers including Pileated and Red-Bellied,and is best known for the migratory warblers. There are 20 different warblers that have been seen including Prothonotary, Cerulean, and Yellow-Throated. We’ll stop at the canoe/kayak ramp within the Sanctuary for a hike along the boardwalk through hydric (wet) and mesic (moist) hammocks and sand pine scrub communities to the Margaret Hames Nature Center. On this trip we’ll also observe and discuss additional fauna including 4 species of freshwater turtles. There’s always a chance of observing West Indian Manatee, American Alligators, River Otters, and Gopher Tortoises along the way.

Thursday January 22nd, 2015: 2 Hour Goat Creek Paddle; Sunrise 6:30am-9:00am AND Midday 11:00am-1:30pm                     Limited to 10 participants- Cost $35/person w/kayak rental, $20/person w/own kayak   Meet just north of Valkaria Rd. on Eastern side of Route 1; Paddle out to BC40 (recreational spoil island), weather permitting,and then up into Goat Creek. The area is home to many species of birds both on the Indian River Lagoon and up into Goat Creek. Reptiles abound and depending on the weather, will be using the sun as their heating blankets!

Friday January 23rd, 2015: 3+ Hour to Spoil Islands and Goat Creek-Sunrise 6:30am-10:00am AND Afternoon 12:00pm-3:30pm
Limited to 10 participants- Cost $39/person w/kayak rental, $20/person w/own kayak
Meet just north of Valkaria Rd. on Eastern side of Route 1
Paddle out around BC40 (recreational spoil island) then up and around BC39 (Conservation and Bird nesting island), weather permitting, and then up into Goat Creek. BC39 has a plethora of nesting birds in the winter including the migratory White Pelicans that we call our “Snow Birds”!

Saturday January 24th AND Monday Jan 26th; 3+ Hour Turkey Creek Sanctuary-  8:30am-12:00pm AND 1:30pm-5:00pm Both Days
Limited to 10 participants- Cost $39/person w/kayak rental, $20/person w/own kayak
Meet at Pollak Park Boat Ramp on Main St. just West of RR tracks and Rt. 1 off Palm Bay Rd.
An adventurous, exciting kayaking tour of the Turkey Creek Sanctuary. We’ll go beyond the canoe/kayak ramp to the dam for the Melbourne/Tillman canal and back to Pollak Park snaking through tributaries along the way. Many species of birds will be observed, turtles should be basking in the sunshine and depending on the temperatures, alligators will be sitting on the banks getting warm. Come join us!
